  8. solutions. Regional, national and global solutions will only emerge from
  9. efficient communications - and that's what Web offers you.

  11. WHAT IS WEB?

  13. Web is a computer based communications system whose charter is to help
  14. nonprofit groups communicate more effectively. Any person with a
  15. computer can now communicate locally, nationally or globally with other
  16. Web users ..... by way of a local telephone call.

  18. By using energy efficient electronic mail and computer conferencing, you
  19. can now contact other concerned people across Canada and in 90 other
  20. countries - faster than mail and cheaper than telephone, fax, or telex.

  22. Canada-wide communications via Web offers the possibility for greater
  23. liaison and co-operation between organizations and individuals with
  24. similar interests than has been possible in the past.

  26. Web is operated by Nirv Community Resource Centre, a nonprofit
  27. organization that assists other nonprofit groups in acquiring and using
  28. the latest in information technology.  Nirv Centre provides
  29. consultation, computer equipment, customized software and training.

  32. HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM WEB?

  34. Web allows you to participate in regional, national and global
  35. discussions on the vital issues of our time.

  37. Electronic Mail - Web's Electronic Mail System allows users to send
  38. messages and mail to each other instantly.

  40. Computer Conferences - allow any number of individuals to share
  41. information, present papers, strategize, plan joint projects, conduct
  42. research, and discuss issues. Private conferences can also be arranged.
  43. There are over 1000 conferences on topics ranging from urban poverty, to
  44. disarmament, to global warming.

  46. Calendars - This is where you can let people know about your events and
  47. campaigns, and find out about what others are doing. Job Postings -
  48. Listings of employment opportunities with nonprofit and social change
  49. groups both in Canada and around the world are available.

  51. News Services -  You can get your news right from the source. Newswire
  52. articles are sent on a daily basis from South Africa, East Germany,
  53. Nicaragua and El Salvador, and many other locations.

  59. HOW MUCH DOES WEB COST?

  61. Web has two basic rates:

  63. Individuals and nonprofit groups pay $180/year ($120/year if their
  64. income is below $30,000), with a $25 one-time membership fee, and
  65. $6.00/hour system usage charge (plus a $7.70/hour Datapac connect charge
  66. if outside of Toronto).

  68. Government and affiliated agencies, and commercial organizations, pay
  69. $270/year, with a $40 one-time membership fee, and $10/hour system usage
  70. charge (plus a $9/hour Datapac connect charge if outside of Toronto).

  72. THINKING GLOBALLY  -  THE APC

  74. Web is an autonomous member of the Association for Progressive
  75. Communications (APC), a world-wide body dedicated to providing a
  76. low-cost global communications service for people and organizations
  77. working for peace, the environment, international development and social
  78. change.  Member networks pool resources to further the global spread of
  79. progressive communications.

  81. Current APC systems include Web in Canada, IGC (PeaceNet/EcoNet) in the
  82. US, GreenNet in the UK, NordNet in Sweden, Alternex in Brazil, Nicarao
  83. in Nicaragua, ComLink in Germany, Chasque in Uruguay, GlasNet in Russia,
  84. and Pegasus in Australia.  Other APC-associated regional networks exist
  85. in Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, Ethiopia, Senegal, Ghana,
  86. Cuba, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Bolivia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia,
  87. and Czechoslovakia.
